The cost of the status quo

The drift between the record and the ship is not a documentation inconvenience. It shows up as:
  • Scope discovered too late. Work is planned from drawings, then re-planned once the steel is exposed. Schedule and cost both move, and they only ever move one direction.
  • Offhire and overruns. A vessel sitting in dock past its planned window is not earning. Extensions driven by unexpected scope are the expensive kind.
  • Rework from inaccurate documents. Parts fabricated to a drawing that no longer describes the ship have to be made again.
  • Compliance risk that surfaces at survey. A condition or certification question found by the surveyor is a much worse problem than the same question found six months earlier.
  • Context that leaves with people. When a superintendent or port engineer moves on, the reasoning behind past repairs goes with them.

Every part of the model traces to the drawing, survey, or measurement behind it, and to the person who approved it. The record survives staff changes, ownership changes, and yard changes.

Vessels of the same class share structure, and repeat part families recur across a fleet. A resolved component does not have to be resolved again from scratch on the next hull.

Inspection findings, thickness measurements, and completed repairs land in the model as recorded evidence. The five-year cycle stops eroding the record and starts improving it.

Planning horizons get longer

Once condition is known rather than assumed, repair and steel-renewal work can be planned further out instead of being held as an unallocated buffer against the unknown.

What this does not solve
